hey guys, i'm 19 yrs old, i live in chicago, and i cannot afford health insurance.

i work two jobs (one which is paid under the table) and i go to college. with high college costs, i do not make enough money to have health insurance...and unfortantly my job does not offer it. because of my salary, i have womens insurance, which is great but i also really need health coverage.

do any of you know any free based health insurances? i used to use "all kids" which was completely free, but they end that the day you turn 19. if anyone can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

...or, if you know of any cheap GOOD insurances also, id appreicate that as well.

thanks!

  1. The Free County Clinic

  2. Have you tried getting insurance through your school? Sometimes they're not too expensive. Also check out http://www.ez-insurancesearch.com to find some of the cheaper rates in your area.

  3. One thing that pops into my mind is that some of the walk in clinics around here (not chicago) offer a monthly payment plan for office visits.  It is relatively cheap, but is good for dr. visits only and would not cover any major health or hospital.  Sorry, not exactly what you are looking for but thought I'd throw it out there just in case.

FYI - the higher your deductibles are the cheaper your rates are.  Keep this in mind if you do shop around for insurance.  Since you are only 19 your major medical deductible could be $5,000 which might decrease you payment.

  4. If your goal is to find the cheapest Illinois health insurance plan with comprehensive major medical coverage then you will want to investigate some of the following insurance companies:

    1. Aetna

    2. Humana

    3. Golden Rule (United Healthcare)

    4. Celtic

    5. UniCare

I checked some average quotes for 19 year olds living in Chicago (with the zip code of 60601) and the cheapest plan that I could find was $45/monthly from Humana (although you may be able to find an even cheaper plan if you are willing to accept a very high deductible).

The key is that you want to choose a plan with comprehensive major medical coverage that will cover you with at least $2 million of lifetime coverage in case something major happens (i.e. cancer, surgery, a broken leg, etc.). Watch out for discount plans and other plans with very limited benefits.

You will want to do some comparison shopping and speak with an independent health insurance agent that can give you some personalized guidance about health insurance plans and networks in your area of Illinois.

  5. I highly recommend the following site to compare health insurance plans:

    http://www.nationalinsurancesite.com/hea...

I used it to find my PPO plan with Bluecross. I saved a fairly good amount. Good luck!

  6. That would be, welfare insurance.  It's called "medicaid",  and with two jobs and the ability to pay for college, you probably don't qualify.

All kids is welfare insurance.  *I* paid for it, and every OTHER person who paid into taxes.  You're paying for it now, for someone else, with your legal job.

My advice - don't get sick, because health insurance DOES cost $200 a month for a no deductible plan, at your age.

Or, you can find a local clinic, by calling your health department, that might do an earnings based service.
