So I was swimming my BFF's pool and I haven't been swimming since last summer when it was nice out.

Usually I can swim the almost full length of the pool underwater but I could barely swim underwater today without losing my breath.

I'm exposed to A LOT of second hand smoke but I can't really help it because my dad & his friends smoke. They have for my whole life

What should I do? I also am I runner but I can't run anymore without getting out of breath,, I'm 13.

  1. Longer breathing has to do with endurance..

If you run, or swim daily, or do both, which is even better, you should be able to improve your endurance and, therefore, hold your breath longer.

  2. I heard somewhere that blowing up ballons makes your lungs stronger it's like exercise for them

    good luck

  3. Try practicing daily to get your lungs use to it. Try practicing in the tub or the sink. Do you have a pool?

  4. If you can't access a pool daily, just run or jog everyday. It'll do the same thing to your lungs as swimming. By running it makes your lungs expand more and you get used to that and you can breathe in more and hold it for longer. :D

    Hope this helps!

P.S. You should talk to your dad about the whole smoking thing. Try to get him to quit! It's bad to smoke! Or at least if him and his friends DO smoke, ask you dad if they can smoke outside so it doesn't get trapped in the house and stink it all up. ;D

  5. well if you think its because of the second hand smoke thing maybe youu should go see a doctor to find out if it is cause. or maybe sence you haent swam sence last summer you had to get used to it, or if you were tired before you wont be able to hold your breath as long. but if its not just today i suggest the doctor. he'll/she'll know what to do.

  6. if u havent done that stuff in a while u hav 2 retrain myself 2 do it...and as u practice moe evry year u get better. it happens 2 me all the time w. the pool.
