I can connect to the Internet on my other computer, and my laptop through a wireless router. I restarted my modem, but that hasn't worked. I have Yahoo DSL. What can I do?

  1. By any chance, do you have ZoneAlarm?  If so, there's a likely fix.  It seems that a new MS Update and ZoneAlarm (both free & paid) do not play well together ... the MS update alters the way the OS (it also hits Linux) handles DNS requests, scrambling the source port address for cloaking purposes.

For now, the resolution is to open ZoneAlarm, click Firewall, and go to the "Main" tab.  Then move the slider for "Internet Zone Security" from "High" down to "Medium".   (Apparently the medium setting is secure enough.)  Alternatively, some suggest uninstalling the patch (KB951748), but windows update will probably try to push the update through again.  A fix is purportedly in the works.

  2. This problem is exploding in the last few hours. It's a specific Security Update that Microsoft distributed in the last 24 hours that effects computers running ZoneAlarm (all editions).  Here's the fix:

    Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

    Check the box "Show Updates"

Wait for the entire list of programs to load.

Scroll down and look for "Security Update for Windows XP KB951748"

Click Remove and uninstall the Hot Fix.

Restart your computer; it should be fine now.

    Hope this helps!
