Question:

I can't decide what I want to do with my life.?

I'm entering my second year of high school and I'm still unsure of what I want to do as a career when I'm older. My parents want me to become a lawyer or an eye doctor, but those sound so boring. I'm an extrovert and tend to change my mind a lot. Are there any fun jobs that make a nice amount of money? I'm not talking rich, but enough for an apartment or small house that I'd share with a room mate?

  1. You'll find as you get older your priorities change a lot.  I'm in college now, 3rd year, and I'm learning some things.  Like, marriage isn't such a bad idea, especially once your friends start tying the knot, and most of all, that my parents were right about almost everything.  Lawyers and eye doctors have great jobs.  Sometimes you don't realize how "fun" a job is until you get into it.  Imagine just being able to master a craft, and then practice it everyday to help people that can't help themselves.  It's more rewarding than you might think.

  2. Many extroverts do well with a business/communications major.

Do you have older siblings/cousins you could talk to? They all have friends in dozens of different jobs and could probably help you more than your guidance counselor.

  3. I suggest you take a career test to see what careers you would be good in. (Colleges have career cents too.) I just read a book called Career Match, and it was shockingly accurate. I would suggest you try being a waitress at a trendy place to make alot of tips and contacts or perhaps a receptionist at a lawfirm or an eye doctor to get a feel for it. You also have atleast 2 years of general classes, so I say just start taking those while you decide.

  4. Don't worry about it, you're still young.  In college the average person will change their major about 3x! Yes, three times! and that's in college, where they are older than you.

Have you visited your counselor? There's usually some career test materials that you can take to see what your aptitude is for certain type(s) of jobs.

    Here's a quick one online that's free. www.rocketcareer.com

There are a lot of jobs out there that 'pays a lot'.

The two career choices that you've given are actually general careers.  Within the lawyer field are specializations.  Criminal law, Family law, etc.  Criminal cases are somewhat exciting. :)

The Eye Doctor. There are ophthalmologists, optometrists, and dispensing opticians.  The ophtalmologists are basically specialists in eye surgery, etc.  The optometrists are general practicians, who are able to treat glaucoma, etc.  They can be further broken down into specialists dealing with the elderly, general populace, or pediatric.  The dispensing opticians are those that will just take your prescription and will able to get you the eyecare, eyewear that you'd like.

But if you think they are boring, then look elsewhere.

I really do suggest you taking one or several tests to steer you towards what your interests are.  Use these tests as a guideline of sorts.  You don't always have to pick the exact top of what jobs were 'recommended'.  I'd take a look at all the jobs that were recommended and do research on a few.  If you're able to, go and find people in those professions that has been doing that for a while.  See what kind of advice they are willing to give.

Good luck! There are many, many choices out there.

I would consider you 'successful' if you found an interest and got a job building upon that interest, and were 'happy'.  You don't have to be making 'a lot of money' to be 'happy'.

  5. Well, you'll probably find something along the way. But you could work in a bank, you could manage a factory, you could work as a security person for an office building (my dad did that they pay pretty well)

  6. Don't lose hope your still young I'm still in the same situation I don't know what to do yet either I want to become a veterinarian but you need really good grades and even though I get Aa's and stuff I'm not sure if I'll be able to pass there tests to get into veterinarian school because they'll probs be really hard even though I love animals to bits.  Just keep living life one day at a time and trust me even if you don't know what to do know one day you'll have a great job   ;)
