  1. what u described is caused by either or a short circuit or ground on line, try unplugging all your phones, answering machine , computer, caller id, and plug them back 1 by 1, if u lose your dial tone right after u plug a phone back, that phone is defective and is causing the problem, the trouble might be on your wiring too.   2. You have wiring problems. Most likely you have a grounded connection either in a bad jack or out at the box. Call your phone company to get it fixed. Most companies will fix for free if it outside your home but if it is inside it is your cost. I would call from a pay phone and get the maintenance service package and then wait a day and call for repair then you wouldn't have to pay for the repair and most of the time the cost of the plan is only a few bucks a month.

  3. Get in touch with your phone company, using a cell or a neighbors phone.
