I got a new dvd player and the only way to input the audio to my surround sound is using a digital audio cable (looks like a coaxial) I can't figure out how to get the sound to come out of the surround sound because the only settings are Dvd, tv, radio, cd, vcr, sat. and those all have a/v cables...not the digital cable. if this makes sense. Please help me. (it's an RCA RT2390 surround sound thing too)

  1. Your receiver is capable of both coaxial and optical audio inputs. You can use a single RCA type cable for the hook up if the DVD player has this type of output. You can also use the standard RCA Red/White cables for the audio hook up since all players have this as well as your receiver according to its Specs.

  2. On the back of your DVD player look for a digital audio output.  If it's not optical then it's usually a single black or orange RCA jack.  Connect that into the back of your RCA receiver (yes, it will support both digital cable formats) and set your receiver input  to probably "DVD".

If you're convinced that everything is connected correctly turn your DVD player on without a disc and enter the player's setup menus.  Make sure under the audio settings that it is outputing a bitstream.  Good luck!

  3. Bitstream is also referred to as PCM.

You may also have to select which input your receiver should use. Check in your manual to see if you have to select the optical or digital input for your DVD audio.

My receiver does. I have to designate the input as coaxial or optical digital. My receiver is a Denon not an RCA but you may have to do that also.
