Question:

I can't figure out if I have manual or automatic hubs

I looked at the wheels, the ends of the hubs on the front tires are completely flat and gray. With no writing on them.

The rear tires have these somewhat reflectors for looks I guess in the shape of a circle and cross out. Like a no smoking symbol.

PLEASE help me out!

1990 Ford Bronco II

It's the blue and white one.

Note: On the dash there's a simple 4X4 Button and a Low Range button. If that helps.

  1. if the front hubs are flat and grey you have automatic hubs.  there is a finger operated turn switch on the manual ones.  usually red in color.

  2. Tazz is right. I have a '90 ranger 4x4 with the automatic hubs. Just like your Bronco II. When they were new, you could read on the hubs where it said "4x4 auto locking". Over time, it has worn off on mine. when I drive my other trucks with the manual hubs, I don't usually mind getting out of the truck to lock them in, but, if I don't have to do it,such as with my Ranger, that's fine too. You can engage the normal high range while moving up to about 30-35 mph. For the low range though, you have to be completly stopped, and have the transmission in neutral. Then, just push the low range button, wait for it to light up and you are good to go.

  3. You have automatic hubs. Manual hubs will have a thumb bar in the center to turn to Lock or Unlock and will be readable on the hub. I will tell you from experience that I liked the automatic hubs. Most 4 wheelers would put it into 4X4 then slam the gas pedal and that will bust (break) the automatic hub and then no 4X4. When putting into 4X4 keep a steady speed or 4X4 low just ease into the gas pedal and you will never have this problem.

Hope this helps and have a great day.
