Cockatoo Island is an island smack bang in the middle of Sydney Harbour, and was once a dedicated convict prison. It has just been opened to the public as a camping ground, with 135 camping sites. It's only accessible by a 10-minute ferry (or water taxi) ride from the centre of Sydney.

You can book a camping site but you are limited to the amount of time you can stay to about a month (if I rememember correctly). It has barbecue, shower and toilet facilities. You can take your own tent or hire one!
