(PVC) I had a 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch fitting w/plastic reducer. No matter what I do it still just pushes off the P trap when I tighten it. I tried to not to over tighten under tighten, but no matter what it just keeps leaking?

  1. Do you mean 1 1/2" to 1 1/4" pipe for the drain? (P trap?)

1/2 to 1/4 would be water line.

First check and make sure you have clean pipe, any piece of grit on the pipe and/or under the gasket will make it leak. You do have a gasket in there right? Either a black or gray 'flat' washer or white or clear 'lip' washer? Make sure if the lip type that it sits 'in' the wider pipe and overlaps the joint.

You also need excess pipe (1 1/4") to slide as far down in the 1 1/2" piece so that your joint/gasket/nut is at least an inch and a half or so long, for a 'tail' to extend into your larger pipe. If you don't, this may be why your trap keeps popping off...there isn't enough for the 'compression' gasket to hang onto and when you hand tighten it, you are pulling the two pieces apart.

Last thing to check-the 'nut' (ring) itself...these aren't the greatest for durability-it can easily crack if over tightened and you may not see it when it isn't tightened. If there is any crack to it-it just opens up as you tighten it down.

I make it a habit to always wrap some plumbers 'tape' (the white teflon) around all joints, no matter what-only 2 wraps is enough, and this helps to seal it without gluing it together.

  2. Go to any Homedepot  and buy PVC Extension tube for a couple bucks.  This will solve your problem, you can cut to any length you need, you will most likely need to cut off some coming from sink drain.

    Good Luck

  3. after careful reading, i think i understand what you are saying so:

if you're talking about the end of the "P-Trap" where it picks up the sink drain, your tailpiece <1-1/4> is too short.  it should slide down into the "P-Trap" far enough where the 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 joint can snuggly fit and lock tightly.

alignment is important for a good and proper seal!  you can purchase longer "THREADED 1-1/4 TAILPIECES" from your local plumbing supply store.
