  1. Consult your camcorder manual!! There is a whole section devoted to your answer!! If you misplaced it, download one from the manufacturers support site.

  2. Are you on a PC or MAC?  If PC, are you using Windows XP with SP1?   If so, make sure the camera is connected and on then plug into USB port.  A 'Wizard" should pop up with info about it.

If it is a name brand store bought camera, it should find it.  If not, use the install CD that came with it.   When the wizard asks for the CD, install the drivers.  Re-boot and re-connect the hardware

    Good luck

  3. You did not tell us what kind of camcorder. Manufacturer? Model number? Storage media type?

If it is a miniDV or Digital8 tape based camcorder, USB won't work to transfer video. Firewire (IEEE1394a, i.Link - all the same thing) is required. You may need to install a firewire port. The camcorder needs to be in Play/edit mode.

If it is hard drive or flash memory based, USB should work - but the computer won't beep. Check "My Computer" and see if a USB mass storage device has mounted.

If it is a DVD based camcorder, hopefully your computer has a drawer loading DVD drive. Take the disc out of the camcorder and put it in your computer's drawer loading DVD. NEVER put a miniDVD in a slot loading optical drive. You will need to rip the DVD using something like HandBrake:

If your computer's optical drive is a slot loader OR is CD only (does not read DVDs) or if it is some other media storage (VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, etc...), you need to tell us more information... or you can get an analog/digital converter:

If your computer has only USB:

    If your computer has firewire:

Using the AV cable that came with your camcorder, connect one end to the camcorder AV port and the other end to the A/D Bridge. The A/D bridge connects with USB or Firewire as appropriate.

  4. front kick your computer, it works for me.

  5. USB is  for stills only unless you have an HD camcorder.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

If you have a mini dvd camcorder….

You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer 's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (i downloaded handbrake file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.
