I ran ubuntu 8.4 live cd, I was unable to connect to the internet. After starting up xp, i can't get an ip address from the router. When I log into the router it says that the computer is connected, but has 100% packet loss when testing connectivity. When I was on Ubuntu, I couldn't connect to the internet either.

  1. Try resetting the router. It sounds simple, but I've had the same problem. Turning the router off, then back on reseted everything.

  2. How are you trying to connect to the router? Linux supports almost 100% of the wired NICs (Network Interface Cards) and chip sets, but wireless connectivity is another story. Many of the manufacturers of wireless adapters cannot be bothered to write drivers for Linux or use open source drivers.

If you are doing wireless, make sure your card or adapter is supported.
