At birth my son was born with a few disabilities including loss of hearing. The programs i'm in won't give me enough help to help him with speech and sign. He will be three soon and I would like to know what steps I could take to meet his learning needs.

  1. Try enrolling in night classes to learn auslan (sign language) yourself as your going to need as much as he is.

  2. If your son is having problems with hearing, then there's a big chance he won't learn how to talk. Teaching him the sign language is a great idea. Teach him how to write to.

You might require assistance from special schools as doing this on your own might not give satisfactory results.

  3. See if your town has a special place for him to be, to be in a special program.  If your town doesn't have one then it is always better to go to a bigger town cause they will have a place for your kid to have special needs. Like private schools.

First of all you have to learn sign Languagy for yourself, so that he will learn it.  Then you teach him to talk in sign Language.

Or you can hire a interpeter to help him learn how to speak in sign Language. Then you try to teach him finger spelling.

Now keep in mind that he will need to have an interpeter, cause he is going to in situations where he is going to need one, like examples:

    1) For class - In case the teacher and/or students are not deaf, (This can be known to happen later in life).

    2) In court - He will need to have one, cause the judge would hear his answers from the interpeter, cause if it were the parents, the judge will think that you or anyone are coaching him.

But if you would like to learn sign Language, I would suggest go to a private school, go to college and learn it, Or you can always go to a bookstore, and purchase a book that you can learn sign Language from it.

    Just pray with me.

"Dear Lord Jesus, please help this wonderful person and her son through his disabilities.  Lord please be with him while he struggles life through this.  I hope this kid has a wonderful life growing up.  And Lord please help these two to learn Sign Language.  And please help him the best kid that he can be.  And please him grow up to be a nice wonderful man that you want him to be.  And the Holy precious name we pray......... A-men."

I hope this helps, good luck with you and your son.

  4. Try enrolling him in an early childhood intervention program. If there is one near you.

He'll also benefit from you doing classes in your country's sign language. To find out where you can do this contact a deaf/hearing loss support group as they will probably be able to help you. There's usually a group which is either state or nation wide.

For speech he needs to see a speech therapist/pathologist if his disabilities are what is causing his speech to be delayed. They again may be able to help you with signing. They will definitiely be able to help you with communicating with him.
