I can't get chkdsk to run. How can I correct this?

OS = Windows XP. When I try to run chkdsk, as the computer restarts I get a message that says something like “The file system is NTFS, cannot access disk.” I have tried this: START> RUN> type chkdsk /f in the command box. This does not work either. If anyone could tell me how to get chkdsk to run, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

  1. You don't, from Windows.  Either boot into a command prompt (that's not the same as a command window in Windows), or run error checking (right-click on the drive/Properties/the Tools tab).  that's the Windows version of chkdsk.

  2. Start  -   Run

    Type  :  chkdsk /f  of

                chkdsk /r

    OK

    Dos window

    choice    Y/N    choose Y

    Reboot

    Done

chkdsk /r is the best to do for the fist time, Take a little longer

  3. Your approach is correct, the problem is that chkdsk cannot run in the current session because it cannot lock the Hard Disk.  The screen you mentioned should have also offered a yes/no option to run chkdsk the next time a new session is started....  give it another try.
