I can't get my laptop to connect to the intenet!!!?

Question

Ok. First off I'd like to say that the laptop is not wireless. I am switching the internet from the desktop pc to the laptop simply by unplugging the router cable from the back of the pc and into the laptop. But I just don't know how to get started! I've tried a few things but don't really know what I'm doing.

go control panel>network connections and settings>view network connections>right click on the ethernet card properties give the and just configure your DNS server and assign ip address,subnet mask on your ethernet card

R-Click MyNetwork...Properties>>>>>R-Click the icon that go to properties and then check TCP\IP make sure it is set to aotumatic...............then try again.
