Even after forcing the door open I can't keep it open. It just rolls back down. It is an Amarr door and Amarr had no suggestions at all!

  1. There should be a release inside...........and as far as holding it open.........just buy a piece of 1x4 8' long and cut it to hold the door up...till your in or out.........then take it out.........after you've got the mission finished.     bye

  2. Make sure the springs are not broken.  If they are they need to be replaced and that is what is causing your problem.  This sounds like the problem because of the amount of effort you needed to use to open the door, and because it would not stay open.

  3. Look up at the ceiling in the garage, there is usually a red colored handle on a nylon rope or some kind of handle or level near the garage door opener motor or between the garage door motor and the top of the door.  You pull that handle and it disconnects the opener from the garage door, allowing you to open it manually.

If you don't have one of those handles on your opener, that means you have a really old garage door opener and it is probably time to replace it.  Modern openers automatically reverse when they sense an obstruction (like elevator doors) and won't close when something is in the way.

As for why it rolls back down if you have successfully unhooked the opener:  It is out of balance or one of the balance springs is broken.  You should be able easily lift the door once it is released from the opener mechanism and it should stay up without being propped up.  If it doesn't do that, it needs to be fixed.

Fixing the springs on a garage door opener is a job for a professional, the springs are  placed under enormous tension and could maim or kill you if they snap or are installed improperly.

  4. You are confusing me. First you can`t get the door to open manually because there is no emergency release , Then miraculously the door is open and you can`t figure out how to use a piece of wood to hold it open. No wonder the manufacturer can`t help you. You don`t even know what you need. Not a very good garage door opener if you can force it open.
