I can't identify this plant, like a vine - but not?

Question

Whilst doing the worst job in the world - gardening! , I came across an unusual plant. the stem from ground is covered in its entirety by a leaf, divides equally to two leaves, leaves then 'back grow' and either twinings, a split, or a flower continues on a bare stem. Confused? I am!!

It would be better to have a picture or to describe the flower and the shape of the leaves. From the info' given so far it could be anything.
