I'll make it simple. I know how to play in the penatonic blues scales, and I can play them very well, but after that I'm stuck. I want to be able to play what I want to. I want to be free. I want to play all the styles of music I like all across the fretboard and expand my arsenal.

I don't really know much at all about music theory or anything. I know I need to, so can someone please point me in the right direction? Now, I don't really mean 10 pages of life long goals and things, but where do I start? What should I try and learn, NOW and how do I go about that? Please give an answer here, I really feel stuck. Thanks.

  1. well try practicing the major scales, they give your soloing a different feel and if you feel stuck my suggestion is try listening to different types of music and try to in a way copy their licks and how they do it. in this way you'll be able to expand your soloing vocabulary. Lastly if you're tired of pentatonic blues maybe you could also try learning how to shred :D try going to youtube or http://www.justinguitar.com on tutorials for it.

  2. Try playing with someone else and letting them teach you what they know.  Then go from there good luck.

  3. HIRE A TEACHER.  If you can't learn anything else on the Guitar, then that tells me you DON'T KNOW BASICS... I'll almost bet you are self taught and didn't bother to learn the basics before you moved on to harder things to play... most self taught people hit a brick wall at some point because they NEVER LEARNED THE BASICS.. and... sooner or later... as they want to advance to bigger and better things... their basics bag of tricks is too empty to carry them through.

So... HIRE A TEACHER.. and have them help you get back on track by finding and correcting your weaknesses
