Question:

I can't swim!?

Hi, i'm 14 years old and after having tried learning to swim 4 years ago, I never picked up the right technique. I am going swimming (not classes) and I don't know what the best thing is to do as I am pretty scared of going into the deep end.

Is it possible for me to learn alone, or would I need someone to show me the right way?

Also if I went into the deepest area, would I automatically float to the surface provided I stayed relaxed and how long would it take to come back up?

I really want to learn as I do really enjoy the feeling of 'freedom' in the water, it feels quite spiritual to me.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

:)

  1. I can't swim too...lol just don't give up and always have acompany its a bit dangerous for to to get alone...dying of drowning is not a good one..it makes your dead body look like a baloon floating ..;) just kidding! GOODLUCK!!!

  2. praactice dnt be a wimp us go 4 it n dnt freak out

  3. The most important two things to remember are:

1: Don't panic - stay calm and if you feel out of control relax and float instead of splashing around.

2: Be open that you are not a good swimmer, it's nothing to be embarrased about, don't try and hide it.

I think you could teach yourself if you spent a bit of time watching other peoples techniques, but you'd get a lot out of a private lesson if your going to go often.

    Have fun!

  4. You probably could teach yourself, from swimming in a comfortable level of water and just practising your own way. I used to be terrified of water when I was little but I had swimming lessons for a few years and now Im not scared and I can swim.

  6. You can take one on one swimming lesons which cost around £10 per lesson - 1 hour lesson.  I on't think yu can teach yourself???

14 is no age to not know how to swim!!

You can book onto an adult swimming class  you will be the youngest one there  It's never too late to learn. My Mum was 50 when she had her lessons!

I wouldn't go near the deep end until you are more confident - which will come with classes.  If you invest in agood life jacket/floating aid, you will float without any problems, I wouldn' try it without one if I were you.

    Good luck :D

  7. untill you learn to do away with fear part it is little difficult for you to learn........but an old saying also saY go into deep waters to come out of it ......ideally just try to do it and learn with praCTICE

  8. its really really hard to drown.

people have air inside them just like if you through an empty coke bottle with the cap on in, you wouldnt expect it to sink.

and so if you naturally float, its just a matter of trying to move in whatever way you can.

start in a bit you can see the bottom and feel safe in, then move as far as you want deeper, then tell yourself well done and call it a day.  then next time push it further.  within a few weeks (or days) you could be a pro swimmer.  you dont need tuition unless you want to go super fast.

  9. First and foremost, disregard Hello and Big**. They're answers are by far the stupidest and most blantanly incorrect answers I have ever seen on yahoo answers and following their idiotic advice could potentially cost you your life. I'm a former competive swimmer, current fitness swimmer, former lifeguard and swimming instructor and believe me when I tell you that if you - as a non-swimmer or beginner - jump into deep water then there is an excellent chance that you will not come back up.

Take my advice and sign up for swimming lessons with a knowledgeable and certified instructor. Thousands of people die tragically every year due to drowning and I definitely don't want to see you become one of those statistics, so please take my advice. And regarding your upcoming swimming party/event, don't let your peers pressure you into doing anything your not comfortable with.
