I can't tell if my hamster is in heat?

This is the second time breeding my hamster and she's acting odd. Don't get mad at me for breeding them because I'm using this to get information. I put her and the male in the same cage and they fought a few times, but they didn't squeak at all. They both had wet stuff around their "private" areas that had a nasty odor. We were in the room and the lights were on, should we try again in a few minutes with the lights off?

You do know that hamsters are in heat every four days? If she isn't now, she will be sometime this week. Are you asking because you need to get her and the male separated (because they are Syrians?)? Our male jumps on our female minutes after we put her in with him, so I would say that it'd be safe to put them together for about an hour a day for the next few days...

They were probably peeing to scent mark. Females go into heat every four days so try again tonight like at nine. Don't mate them in the morning because that is when they sleep. If you constantly disturb their sleep bad things happen(trust me I know from experience). This time when mating them put them in a storage box(plastic) so that way neither of them are in each others territory. The lighting doesn't matter. If the female is in heat she will run away for a few strides until the male touches her back with his front paws. He will then wash himself and the females rear several times. Then nature will take care of the rest. Young males may try to mount from all sides, trying the patience of the female. Touching him will usually stop this.

If she runs or fights back at all, she is not in heat. when she is in heat, she will have her tail pointed straight up and when anything touches her back, she will freeze. When she is in heat and the male is around, he will be able to easily get her, and she will not mind at all.
