“I can be a better pitcher,” says Justin Verlander – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Detroit Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander is practicing hard for the upcoming season these days. The right handed pitcher displayed some high quality skills last season to make a name for himself. Showing his composure and character on the field, he helped the Tigers win the American League Central title in 2011.
Making the most of available opportunities, Verlander earned an incredible 24-5 win-loss record with 250 strike-outs. For his astonishing achievements, he was also awarded the American League Most Valuable Player of the season.
Securing the pitching Triple Crown award, Verlander showed the baseball world what he was capable of. However, things will be slightly different for him in 2012 as other American League teams have powered their hitting lineups to considerable extent. It will be interesting to see if Verlander can post stats better those of last season.
In addition to being a fabulous thrower, Verlander always shows interest in taking his game to a higher level. While it may not be possible for him to match his record for last season, he can certainly become a better pitcher. In an interview with a leading sports website, Verlander stated that he is working hard to bring more improvement in his game.
"Well, see, the will for me is to become a better pitcher," Verlander said. "I can't control the wins, the losses, the ERA, stuff like that -- to an extent I can -- but as long as I evolve into a better pitcher, that's all I'm trying to do.Can it turn into a better year? I think so. Could I pitch better? I believe I could. ...”
"Don't think about the numbers, per se, just try to pitch better. And I definitely think that's possible, he further added"
The Tigers will be relying heavily on the pitcher to perform consistently. Undoubtedly, the club has one of the strongest hitting line-ups in the American League. However, it is Tigers’ young pitchers that can be exposed during the playoffs. Verlander will have a greater responsibility on his shoulders. Considering how hard working he is, the Tigers stand a great chance of pulling off a World Series victory this season.
