I have a new sony laptop, running vista and i'm trying to connect it to the internet, but i'm not having much luck. It will connect to the network but not the internet, using sky broadband. I have removed it and started again, i have used the sky cdrom, i have put in IP addresses, turned off firewalls and anti-virus software, i have checked the lan settings are on automatic. But still no luck. I have tried everything I can think of. I see myself as a pretty advanced user, but i'm truely stumped

  1. How can you tell you are connected to the network

Initially I would reboot the router by pulling the power jack for 30s and reinsert.

If you still can't connect log in to your router following the instructions in the manual and check your encryption settings/passphrase. Enter the same into your sony.

You can also see if windows can detect network problems, Rt click the network icon in bottom Rt corner click on diagnose and repair

and let us know what it says

If all else fails you could ring sky support and they should be able to help

  2. its not the laptop, or the modem/router, its the connection TO the modem. i have frequently gotten the signal from my router, but the cox cable want plugged in/ it wiggled around and lost connection thats pretty much what it is. OR you dont have the right cable plugged in. try having cox installed. im happy with it! :D

  3. must be your ip settings.

  4. I have exactly the same problem with my Sony Vaio - but not just with Sky, with any wireless network (BT, Orange, Bulldog - to name but a few).

The computer tells me I have made a connection - I can even see and pick the wireless networks available, and can enter security codes, etc. It tells me signal strength is good/poor, etc, but in the 'activity' section of the Local Area Connection Status box, the 'packets received' bit always says 0 (packets sent keeps increasing).

And, unlike when a network cable is connected, Internet Explorer says there is no internet connection. It works fine when I plug in a cable from the router to the computer.
