I can drive auto, think I can learn stick real quick?

Question

I know the basics: clutch to shift, neutral to stop,slowly let the clutch up and gas down in first.

I think people try reading more into driving a stick than what is really there.  I have driven a stick since I was a teenager and I am a truck driver and now I shift with out even using the clutch.  You have people tell you that you can't shift without the clutch and not mess up the tranny, but I can tell you I had 1 car that had 11 miles on it when I got it and I finally had to get a new clutch at 200,000 miles and everything still looked new.  

But driving stick is nothing once you get the hang of it.

You can learn, youll still kill it a few times..and youll probably squeal the tires too but youll learn quickly

You can probably learn well enough to drive in a few hours. It took me a couple of afternoons (maybe 2 hours at a time) of practice to get comfortable enough to hit the road. But getting really good takes regular practice. Don't be discouraged if you stall out a few times in traffic. Just try to keep your cool and get going again. Good luck!

This may take a few tries, you just have to get familiar with the stick and try not to stall out in first gear.

It's a skill that needs time to master. Once you have it, you'll always remember it. I drive a semi & the first time I drove a semi in school, I killed it a few times, but after a little practice, I can double clutch a 10 speed like I was born to do it. G'luck.

I had been learning to drive a stick earlier this weekend.  It isn't too difficult.  You just need to get that feel for when that it starts to engage, and you'll be fine.  Most people can learn in anywhere from an hour to maybe five or six hours.  Best not to do more than two hours straight.  Muscle memory for the next day will save you time.
