I can never finish what I start?

I always have trouble finishing things that I start.

I'll get all pumped up for something and then about 80% through, I'll give up, gradually do it less and less, and then all together stop.

When I say everything, I mean everything. This happens with school, work, sports, ANYTHING!!

I don't know what it is, but I really need some help!

THIS IS KILLING ME!

  1. Perhaps you should see a therapist about this? It might not be that you're not committed, so much as it might be that you have and actual illness that is preventing you from finishing things.

If you don't want to see a therapist, then perhaps you can try to finish small things and gradually work you're way up to larger projects. Basically, practice finishing things.

  2. First you need to think about why you never finish what you start. What is the source of your problem? Is it because you get easily bored? not enough challenge? Taking on too much for the time you have allocated? Just become habit? It's not quite easy to answer this straightforwardly.

You need to tell us why you don't finish anything so we find the real source of the problem. At least you realise there is this problem but if you get through 80% why can't you finish the last 20%. You probably have the answer to this yourself. Sorry if I'm not much help but you need to mention the source of your problem.

  3. Well, you finished this question, and did a nice job of it.  You obviously did it in parts, as seen by your short paragraphs.  This could be a clue to you as to how you can finish other projects, written or not.  Instead of seeing a task as some mountain to climb and getting tired half way up, break up that mountain into small hills.  Then, tackle each hill in turn.  Pretty soon you'll have climbed all the hills and conquered the mountain.

For example, if you have to write a term paper, break it into sections.  Work on one section at a time, breaking it down into even smaller sections to hold your attention and energy.  It doesn't matter whether you start with the introduction, the middle parts, or the conclusion.  They'll all fit together in the end anyway, so work on the part that interests you most first.  When you see what a good job you did on that, you will have both momentum and motivation to work on the more tedious parts.  Just break them down into smaller tasks, or work for only a set amount of time on each part, then set it aside to rest or do something more interesting.  Then, go back and pick up the next part.  Sooner than you think, you'll have surprised yourself and gotten the whole thing done without losing interest or motivation.

I know this works because this is how I've always viewed chores, tasks, homework, essays, term papers, etc.  Good luck, and remember the old saying that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

  4. You may be experiences a problem so go see a therapist definitely. tha is the best way to know what is the matter. You are probably just not good at finising anything but trust nme, the therapist will help you !! :)

  5. Do stuff with a friend.  Believe me, it helps.

For example, the only reason I'm going to the gym is because I keep going with my friend.

Also, who says you can't go back later to unfinished projects?  If it's bothering you, go back and finish what you've started.  If you keep working on something, eventually it'd get done.

  6. Possible ADHD.  See your doctor.
