To remove the actual sites you delete the browsing history. To delete the search words do the following.

That is part of the autofill feature that can be turned off in options.

In IE go to internet options/ content/ autocomplete/ settings/ forms.

In Firefox go to options/ privacy/ history/ remember what I enter in forms and the search bar.

You can also delete the entries by double clicking on an empty search box, dropping down to the first item, and then pressing delete for each entry.
