How do you access it? From top, side (toward front or back) or bottom. Do you have to remove something to find it? Does anyone have a picture of where to find it? Thanks.

  1. if he doesnt know where or what the crank sensor even looks like...what makes you think he has a timing light?

  2. Is this on a Vauxhall engine?  Condensation generally causes their premature failure.  The crank sensor is a small electronic component (which usually lives on a bracket) facing the bottom pulley.  A small magnet on the pulley passes every revolution, giving a signal to the sensor... the ECU can then determine the fuelling and ignition for this given engine speed/check if the engine speed is rising or falling and make adjustments...  Expect the crank sensor to have two thin wires (probably on a plug, so you can change it easily) running to it, and be only the size of the top of your finger or thumb.

Other engine management systems often use a bottom pulley with teeth present on it, but one tooth is missing -  the electronic system senses this missing tooth.

  3. Should be on the big pulley. get a timing light and aim it in there
