I cant remember exactly what I was doing but I try to go back to the previous page and this antivirus xp 2008 window tells me to download it, so I exit out of the little question box. Then about a minute later I see that it has downloaded all on it's own and is setting up. Then I go on a different computer and I go on the web and I find that it's a counterfeit antivirus/spyware program. So I go to yahoo answers and I try the run box thing where you type cmd and I couldn't get any further because it said error- click ok to terminate the program. Then I click on everything on my desktop individually to test it and it says the same thing. Then I restart my computer and I try to log in and it shows the same error message. Then I go back to yahoo answers and I do the safe mode thing and the same error message appears when I tried to log in as administrator. If anyone knows how to help me or wipe out my hard drive manually please do.

keep in mind that I cant log on to my computer.

  1. I had to get rid of this scumware the other day.

it hijacked the browser and stopped av programs from running. it also stopped firefox and opera.

    download a rootkit revealer from

    http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tool...

    it is free.

install and run it and it will find hidden files- delete them all

now download avast free home edition from avast.com

allow it to update and then scan the machine.

it will find the other nasties

worked for me on more than one occassion

if you cannot boot into windows then go here

    http://www.f-secure.com/download-purchas...

and download the free dos version and boot your machine from the cd drive with that. you might need to enter the bios to tell it to load from cd first.

this will run and scan before your infected o/s is loaded- remember to read the instructions

    ^^^^^^^^^^^another edit

why the tumbs down neo??? I have followed your c**p link. A feature of this program is that it often deletes earlier restore points!!!!

I have manually managed to get rid of it before, have you?!?

the thumbs down feature is not there to diss other answers just because they are different from yours. it should be used when the answers are dangerous or spam or just stupid

  2. I had the same thing and i was not able to view my favorite web pages. I found this on my laptop http://www.pchubs.com/blogs/antivirusxp-... and was able to follow the process and after i finished i rebooted and my pc was back to normal. I could not belive it. it actually worked and i didn't spend a dime.

  3. Try to click to start, click all programs, find antivirus 2008 uninstall,.  Then acquire the spyware doctor or other anti-virus , anti-spyware that may curb it's virus behavior.

  4. Yes, Microsoft Windows is plagued with malware, isn't it! A wipe is easy (and probably the best thing to do anyway). Just boot from your restore media and follow the on-screen prompts. Once you've reinstalled and patched up, make sure to install a decent security suite like this one:

    http://www.eset.com/smartsecurity/

When thats on you can then attach your Windows computer back up to the internet.

You can install it while your Windows system is still infected, but its not ideal.

Remember that you don't want something that just removes this one thing - that would be pointless! Your system is likely infested with loads of different viruses and spyware. Free "scanners" are pointless too - what happens in 10 mins? Oh, you get infected again... You need a full protection suite with support.
