I cannot get the Windows "service package 3" update to load and install, do you know what I can do?

It slowly...slowly goes through the install process, but then stops with a red yield sign that says "access denied" and immediately goes to the uninstall process. I have Webroot spy sweeper and McAffee. Tried it once with webroot ss off. Other Window or microsoft update have automatically updated with no problems. Any simple fixes for computer illiterate person?

  1. You can try all that what has been suggested by the other repliers,

    but I would just leave it as it is. Windows XP service pack 2 is what you really need, SP 3 is not necessary. It does not do anything negative or positive with your pc. It is just there.

    When we were using SP1, we were forced to install SP2, because microsoft stopped supporting SP1 and to be able to get the necessary updates we needed sp2. This is not the case with SP3. When auto update installs it, let it do so, but trying to install it your self is a waste of time. Some computers even getting problems after sp3  is installed.

    Again, just be happy with sp2, it is all you need

  2. install IE7 and validate your windows first

    just keep doing windows updates, not microsoft updates.

    if you doing microsoft updates, scroll to the bottom of the microsoft updates screen and click change settings to windows updates.

    delete all cookies and history from your browser and try windows updates again.

    IE7

    =======

    Over time IE7 seems to set its own (or programs do) tick boxes in the advance tab.

    In IE7 Tools >Internet Options >Advance Tab

    Click Restore advance settings defaults button.

    Then scroll the listings down to near the bottom and:

    Tick empty temp files when browser closes (this empties the cache, which if not empty, will stop you from going online).

    Bullet disable phishing filter (optional. Leave it on if you want that type of protection, usually for financial data like internet banking)

    Delete Browser History, cookies, add ons,  the whole lot regularly.

    Close the browser to set the settings.
