I cannot view previous mesages on a new group I just joined, how do I fix this?

Just joined a new group that has been existent for several years. Would like to view the previous messages (as the calendar shows many) but I do not even get a messages option on the menu bar? What gives, and how do I solve this?

the owner has the archives closed, which is why that icon 'messages' is not there. nothing you can do, those older posts are closed per the settings the owner has.

On the left when you're in the group, you should see "Messages".  Click on that and it will take you to all the messages, listed as they were posted.  The newer ones are at the bottom...
