I'm doing a lot of research for fancy rats and I already understand that I need two rats to keep company, types of bedding, cages, etc. The only problem I am facing so far is where to get my rat(s). I live in MS and there isn't much choice besides going to Petsmart. I've been hearing to NOT get my rat from there and I would gladly not if I could find an official rat breeder. Anyone know how and where I can get my pet rat(s)? Thank you so much!

  1. You can adopt rats from an animal shelter.

  2. You can email J & J in Red Banks at ScoBichona4wlr@aol.com or Rockwell Rodentry in Meridian at shaggysgurl57@hotmail.com.  J&J does not ship their rats, so you will have to go to them.

Adopting is good option as well.

  3. craigslist.org

  4. Have you considered adopting? Check http://www.petfinder.com

If there are none listed, try googling a shelter near where you live. Or try phoning a vet and asking for one. Shelters are flooding with babies.

And if that doesn't work, you can try to look through some classifieds or vet listings for people giving away babies. Soemtimes someone's rat will have an accidental litter, or someone rescues a pregnant rat.

Just adding, you really do not need to avoid petsmart, it is pet stores all together. All their rats come from the same places, there is no difference.
