Question:

I cant find the TCP/IP to enter my IP address to improve boot time

I'm trying to enter an IP address so my pc doesn't have to check with the network to see what IP addresses are available. By manually assigning one it speeds up boot time. But to do this i have to get onto the properties of "network adapter card" where i am meant to add information. i believe it is meant to be found when you go "Start", "connect to" then "show all connections". This is where i am stuck. Can anyone tell me where to find the "network adapter card"? or how i can set an IP address along with "subnet mask", "default gateway" and "DNS Server".

thanks

  1. You are nearly there.

For XP (hopefully other microsoft OS's will be similar!)

    1. Right click your connection (after you have done the 'show all connections' bit)

    2. Select 'properties'

    3. Select 'General' in the new window.

    4. This should show 2 boxes. The second should read 'This connections uses the following items:'

    5. Scroll down this until you get to 'Internet Protocal ( TCP/IP).

    6. Select properties in the box just below it. (on the right hand side)

    Should be there.

    Good luck!

ps. If your router is supposed to find your IP address automatically then it might not like it because it isn't meant to be fixed?!

  2. Most networks run DHCP, so locking in your own IP can cause network conflicts and mess you up.  Also, its not going to have any kind of discernable effect your boottime...

but if you really want to know your net information

run "command prompt" and type in ipconfig

it will tell you all your network info
