I cant get my direct tv to go to two different jacks in the same room?

i have two direct tv/ cable outlets in my living room, i have a tv connected to one but now am trying to connect another tv to the other. when i plug it in the tv says it is searching for a signal. i have an open jack in my basement to connect any other jack in my house. is there any way i can get this to work outside of guess and check?

logically, the signal should split.  So the problem will be anywhere from the splitter (get a good one) to the line that is split off.  You may need an amplifier on the line as well.
