  1. Whoa, seven is too old to have puppies and if she's seven months she's way too young to have puppies she must be no younger than 2 years old before having a litter.

Has she had all the genetic testing to make sure she's not passing on genetic defects?  has she had hip and eye tests to make sure she's worthy of breeding?  Does she conform to breed standards, does she have titles from dog shows to show she's top in her breed, are her parents champion show dogs or come from champion lines?

If you can't figure out her heat cycles then you have no place breeding her.  If she's seven months old then she hasn't matured enough to even have a heat cycle, most heats begin around 12 months of age.  If she is seven years old then she might not be getting them as often as she used to.  She's in her 40's in human years and too old too breed.

Read this article and then decide afterwards if you think it's really worth the hassle.

Get her spayed you aren't doing her any favors by breeding her.

  2. She is seven years old, or seven months old? Either way, that's either much too young (or too old) for breeding. Why does she need to have a litter? Does she have a CH title? Has she been health tested? Does she meet her breed's standards? There are many Maltese out there that have to be euthanized every day because there are too many of them. Please get your dog spayed and leave the breeding to the professionals.

  3. I assume 7 months.  she may stil not have come into her first season yet.  plus she is still very much too young to have a litter yet.  She is no more than a 12 year old child having a baby.  she really should be nearly 2 to have a litter.

But the question you really need to ask yourself is why do you want a litter before she is spayed.  if is is because you love puppies or want to share your pup with others cause you love her then you really need to evaluate the reasons again.

The truth of the matter breeding her cost money in not only time, and vet care, but also in death.  you could very well loose her while she is delivering her litter, you could loose the whole litter, you could need a c-section at 2 am are you ready for that or the vet that says sorry not available tonight come back tomorrow and then we will section her.  Are you ready for all the time that a litter takes up.  if you work or hae kids how much time do you honestly think you can spend with the puppies?  where will the puppies be kept?  how are you going to keep them warm?  will you be able to ake off work for 6 weeks to bottle feed if she dies or they are not doing well?

Really take a long hard look before you look at breeding her.

  4. Get her spayed - there is no need for her to become pregnant. It's healthier for her and less costly for you if she is spayed. Why exactly do you want her to have a litter?

FYI, dogs need to be at LEAST two years old before they should have a litter. Any younger and you risk wearing out her still developing body - she may die giving birth and the pups may be rejected (if any survive.)

Here's a site i think you should read through:

  5. If she is 7 months old, she probably hasn't been in heat yet.  She shouldn't be bred on her first heat anyways.  If she is 7 years old, then she is getting too old to breed.  You need to find a couple of good books on the in's and out's of breeding and read them cover to cover.  Plus you need to find a good mentor that will help you through the process too.  You sound very unknowlegdable about the process.

  6. im not sure whether you mean 7 months or 7 years, if you mean months then she's way to young, she needs to be at least 18 months, i have got a sube husky (3 months) and i wish to breed her to, and if she's 7 then you should breed her sooner rather than later, now im not to sure about when dogs come into season but i do know they don't all come on at exactly the same time, but your vet will know for sure so just arrange a visit.

however you must make sure she is healthy and has an excellent temperament, go to your vet and get her tested, and it is best to breed with another worthy maltese, however im not against you breeding at all, i have a non kc reg husky and have been told she is not good enough to breed, however don't let it discourage you, as long as your sure your maltese has a fine temperament, nice and healthy and check at the vet that she wont pass on any hereditary problems.

    good luck!!

  7. Have you done research on breeding her?  Is she a "worthy" specimen of the breed?  Does she meet AKC standards?  Has she had all of her health clearances?  Maltese can have slipping patellas and thyroid problems.  If you are sure she is worthy of being bred after consulting with someone who possibly shows and exhibits maltese and they think she is a nice.

Have you whelped a litter before?  Are you prepared for the "problems" that can happen while whelping?

Some dogs do not cycle in regular intervals.  You might want to consult with a good reproductive vet.
