I have a map turtle and I believe its a false map or a northern map turtle.

Normally the water in its 30gallon tank is 1inch or lower.

I raised it alittle over 3inches. My turtle shell length long is 2 & 1/2 inches long(Latitude, down)

Is alittle over 3inches to deep?

(I have rocks that come out of the water and under the water)

Please tell me ASAP.

Thanks

  1. Two suggestions: raise the water level even more and replace the rocks. Rocks are fine if they are stable. If not, they can pin the turtle underwater. You can make a good ramp and basking platform out of hardware cloth.

  2. I would make the water much deeper. Just make sure that he has a ramp to get out onto something dry to bask. Buy a ramp/land area with suction cups that will allow you to set it to the water height.

Map turtles live in lakes and rivers that can be deep. Filling the tank with 12 inches of water would be better for him and not harmful. You greatly increase their living space with more water.

I have a male Map Turtle that is about 4-5 inches, 13 years old, and lives happy in a 55 gallon tank that has about 15 inches of water, a fluval 404 filter, air wand, rocks and driftwood in the water, heater, land, etc. Hes had this tank since he was the size of a quarter.

Not only is more water better for the turtle, but also make viewing him more enjoyable.

    Use a good filter.

  3. I guess you are asking if the water is too deep?  Watch your turtle and make sure it can climb out onto those rocks.  The slope should not be too steep and the rocks shoudl be rough enough so he can get a grip on them and crawl up easily.  Although Maps are primarily aquatic they do like a basking area where they can crawl out and sun themselves and warm up.
