  1. I agree with the comment above.  Use CareFresh.  It's recycled paper that absorbs unlike any other substrate.  That's what I use for my hamsters.  You should still clean the cage once a week just to get rid of any bacteria, but most likely there will not be any odors.

As far as the whole potty training thing, it can be a hit or miss.  Don't feel bad if it doesn't work for you.  It worked for 6 out of my 8 hamsters.  I pretty much gave up on the other two.  So I just find the wet spots and remove them from time to time.  Hope this helps!

  2. It is most likley the bedding that you are using thats stinking. I recomend using CAREFRESH bedding. It is extreamly safe and is the best oder controling bedding out there. http://www.petsmart.com/graphics/product...

Every day feel around the bedding for wet spots. Remove the wet bedding every day and put in some more dry bedding. Then at the end of every week dump out all of the bedding and wash the cage.

Do you know that u can potty-train your hamster(s) like any other pets? It may need some efforts and patience but worth all the troubles. At the end of the day, you will be delighted and pleased with a job well done (I surely did). All you need to do is to locate the favorite 'urinate' spot. After finding it, just do these little steps:

Find a glass or plastic jar that is big enough for your hamster to turn around and take the lid off.

Turn the jar on its side and place it in the "bathroom corner".

You could also place some droppings into the jar to encourage your hamster (optional).

Introduce the pee-jar by placing it in front of your hamster.

You will be surprised to find your hamster's wastes (liquid) inside the jar the next day. (IMPORTANT: the droppings dry quickly and is 'odor free' so do not worry if you find droppings everywhere the place. The advantage of potty-training is that you can get rid of the bad smell if you clean the jar everyday. You do not have to put clean shavings in the bathroom corner frequently since their liquid wastes will only be touching the inside of the jar.

  3. If it smells like pee or p**p or a combo maybe the stink got on the walls of the cage . You can buy deorderizer and it will kill the stink you need to like wash the cage with like a hoze or shower head in the shower and drizzle the liquid in the places your hamster hangs out the most i do that and it works i dont have the name of the one i use on me but look for a good on.

Hope that helps. Stink be gone!
