Question:

I could use some opinions about braxton hicks contractions?

Hi-

I'm 31 weeks, and I have braxton hicks within minutes (sometimes within seconds) of standing or walking. My husband and I took a walk together one time, and I had a contraction that lasted for several minutes (probably 30). When they start, they do not stop on their own until I sit or lay down.

I was concerned and spoke to my midwife on the phone. She said that she is concerned that the baby is "sitting" on the placenta when I am in an upright position. HAS ANYONE HEARD ABOUT OR EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE? I am so concerned that the blood flow is not reaching the baby's brain- I'll be in for an ultrasound on Thursday that will tell us the location of the placenta to verify if her theory is correct. Just very scared right now....

  1. Try to relax, SF!

One, if your midwife were at all worried, she would have told you to go IMMEDIATELY to the hospital.

Two, there is little risk of blocking your baby's blood flow from your placenta.

Three, you baby is old enough to survive nicely if s/he is born today. Yes, s/he would be a preemie, and would probably need some special care at first.

Four, you and your husband are, and have done just about everything right during your pregnancy.

I've borne and reared 3 daughters. My first came about 4 weeks early. She was small, but she's doing well - set to finish massage therapy school in Dec. My middle daughter graduated college & is now an assistant manager of a horse farm. My youngest is a senior in high school. My husband and I will celebrate our 30th anniv. next month.

All this info is so you and your husband will know you and your baby will get through this scary time.
