The legendary winger claims that he wasn't able to give up on his dream of playing in a major tournament and revealed his delight upon being given the captaincy for this summer's Olympics.
After a dormant half-a-century, the Football Association finally managed to turn the dreams of a combined home nation team into reality.  While the response from the other Federations have been far from encouraging, Stuart Pearce was granted the ominous
task of naming an 18-man squad that could perhaps challenge for gold in London.
Out of the list superstars at his disposal, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Beckham-c10432 was obviously the standout name and public outcry for his inclusion began as soon he announced his desire to represent the team in his own backyard.
Pearce, though, had other ideas and despite being heavily criticized by the media, he chose to leave the L.A Galaxy midfielder out of his final squad.
While Beckham was unlucky not to be included, his former teammate http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ryan-Giggs-c31985 made the cut, with his influential personality and bucket loads of experience at the top level.
Although the most successful Manchester United have ever had in their ranks, the ace winger has failed to grasp silverware at the International stage, primarily because of the Wales' low ranking.
However for the first time, he will be able to make his mark on a tournament involving countries and that fact that he has be given the captaincy, only adds to his pleasure.
Speaking to reporters, the attacker claimed that he was delighted with the opportunity to play in the Olympics, more so by the fact that he will be wearing the captain's armband.
"No. I didn't quite get to a major tournament with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wales-c3041, which will always remain a big disappointment. But it is great to be involved in the tournament environment - I've not experienced that before. I have only been here a day but I am really looking
forward to it."
He also commented on the fact that there were no representatives from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Northern-Ireland-c2972, stating that the press were over exaggerating things , when they should be focusing on the football side of things.
"All I have seen [is what is] in the press, really. As a player and a Welshman, I just wanted to be involved. Just like the Welsh lads involved, they're Welsh but we just wanted an opportunity to play for Great Britain in an Olympics on home turf so I think
it was a chance we couldn't turn down," he said.
Great Britain play their first match at Old Trafford on the 26th of July.
