I currently sprint a quarter mile. How long should it take about to get to 3 miles.How often should I run?

I have jogged and have done short sprints for a year but never trained for long distance sprints. My real goal is just good anaerobic stamina so I can do wrestling and kick boxing.

  1. You're training for activities that you don't necessarily have to run long distances to be successful at...

    Try Interval Training.  60 second sprint followed by a 60 second slow jog.  Work your way up to 10 sets... the slow jog is your "break", and it should be a continuous exercise.  This would be the best for what you're training for... 3 times a week, work your way up to 10 sets.

    If you want to work your way up to 3 miles, and you're currently only used to hammering your joints for 200 yards at a time, you need to ease your way into it.  You could probably run 3 miles tomorrow slowly with no problem, but it's not good for you.

    Your muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones are not used to being pounded on for a half an hour consecutively.  Eventually you could develop tendinitis, shin splints, microfractures (stress fractures), etc.  Start w/ a mile.  If you feel like you're dying, walk a block and start jogging again.  Slowly work your way up to three miles.  There is no "how long should it take to get there?"... it just takes you however long it takes for you to be able to cover that distance comfortably.  Good luck.


  2. okay, just to let you know spinting doesn't work with long distance.

    but the ability that you do have to sprint will help you push yourself.

    start off slow, it will be different.

    I did the same thing a few years ago. I went from sprinting 100 and 200 meters to running Cross Country.

    Start off with  mile and then build from there each week.
