so heres the thing: i suck at volleyball. i havent played in years, letting the popular girls push me away from trying at the sport in highschool. i miss it soooo much. i will be a senior next year and i want to play on the varsity squad. i have been practicing but i have such terrible ball control skills. i am unable to afford volleyball camp and the girls wouldnt let me on their summer practice team, b/c they just wanted girls who have been playing during all of highschool. they dont think i'd put my full effort into it. my only choice is to practice every day at home. i have plenty of space. my serves have been getting much much better, but my sets and bumps are aweful. the ball flies in random directions. how do i improve?

i really want to do this. for me. to prove to myself that i actually CAN do this if i really wanted to. plus i just love the sport. but i really need some tips, guildlines, and advice

  1. Your on the right track by practicing everyday. And having tons of space to practice at home is great. To improve your bumps and sets/volleys, try spiking or lightly hitting the ball against a wall of your house. (be sure to have your parents approve) just so it doesn't damage the wall. Find someone other than those girls to practice with. And make sure you get a lot of practice in every day. Making a highschool team can be tough. Also be sure to stay fit. Most coaches look for that. If you really want it, you have to prove it. So practicing every day and staying fit will do the job.

  2. dont get discouraged. I can tell you have so much determination.

Practice on your bumping. The best advice I can give is that the lower you get, the more control you have on the ball. Also, dont swing your hands, just let the ball hit your hand and you direct it. You can do this. Try to get another buddy so that you guys can pepper together. Dont let anybody get you down, only you can let yourself down. I know you wont tho! Good luck, and hope you get on the team!! I'm crossing my fingers 4 you.!

  3. It's easy. You can practice at home!

    Here what to do:

    1) Find an open wall on the side of your house

    2) Make a mark 7 feet and 4 inches high

    3) Then on the ground 30 feet away put another mark

    4) Then practice everyday for an hour or so trying to serve from the 30 foot mark. Make sure the ball hits the wall above the line you made.

This is like a serving from the serve line on varsity volleyball court.

You can also get closer to the wall and practice bumping and setting above the 7 foot line too!

    For better Bump control:

    1) Bend your legs and get square in front of the ball

    2) Put one hand into the other hand's palm (both palms should be facing up)

    3) When the ball comes don't swing your arms up

    4) Let the ball make contact with your arm between your wrists and elbows (fore arm)

    5) Bend you legs back up and slightly bring your arms up to hit

This will make the ball go directly where you want it to.

It will hurt and be tricky at first, but after a while it will not hurt and it will be like second nature to you!

    To set:

    1) Get square in front of the ball

    2) Make a triangular window with your hands (thumbs and index fingers)

    3) Bend your elbows

    4) Let the ball hit your hands

    5) Give a little with your hands and elbows

    6) Then kind of like spirit fingers (or some people call it super man) spread your hands apart and un bend your elbows. making the ball pop up.

    Hope it helps! =]

  4. well i went through what you are going now.

when i came to u.s. i wass really determanited to play volleyball soo everyday that summmer i practiced with my cousion who used to suck just like me. we prracticed everyday that summer not always passing it to each other but each of us having a VB then compting aginst each other to see who can do more sets or bumps. after after that summer we got really good at volleyball we used to play with VB passing for each other for HOURS with out stopping.

ALL you have to do is practice practice practice with the right steps which someone already has answerd and you will be a greatt volleyball player.

  5. hey i know what you r goin through!

KEEP AT IT is my best advice to you. I feel for you in this b/c i played in middle school and i have some people telling me i should do track instead of VB in high school b/c they say im better at it. they were evne telling me i barely got any playing time this year when i played and stuff. but after this year i found out that i really like VB more and i am determined to play- even if its a recreation team! ...and i kinda struggle with ball control too sometimes- but the best thing i think is to practice hitting to yourself either using a wall or hitting straight up and seeing how many reps you can get... Just dont give up and make sure this is really what you want! the only thing; you might want to reconsider wanting to play with the girls who are being rude to you now... they probably wont be the best of teamates either........they just sound like snobs! :(

    Hope i could help! :-)

  6. Tell those girls you ARE going to join their summer practice team! And show them that you are going to put your full effort into it. Prove them wrong! You're gunna be a senior and you are going to be on the varsity team. Don't let them get your hopes up. You just need to build some confidence and then you'll be KICK A S S at volleyball! Good luck, girl :)

  7. you really need a camp girl.... or a team... you need to find some way to get playing time or extra coaching...

really playing time is the best way to learn... if all else fails you can play down with girls a couple years younger than you
