My horse curled its lips right after I dewormed her. Is that normal?

  1. I assume the worming paste doesn't taste particularly good. Some horses spit it out (usually onto the person worming them) and others do the lip curl. My gelding does nothing for a few second then starts sticking his tongue out.

If your horse had worms there will be worms in his stool, but other than that not really any side effects.

  2. well not all horses do that but it isn't anything to worry about.

i have a horse that likes wormer and licks his lips afterwards.

i have a horse that hates it and will fight you over it lol

i have one that likes to chew on the wormer tube!

and two that don't care they are just like "hey lets get this over with!" ;p

  3. That's pretty normal. Either he liked it or he didn't like it. He's just making faces like kids do when you give them medicines.

  4. Usually, there aren't any side effects. My mare goes CRAZY when I try to give her dewormer. She lifts her head up really high, and tries to sit-back. My guess is that it doesn't taste good, so a lil lip curl is just an indication that they don't want to eat it. Almost all of my horses smack their lips, and try to spit it back out.

  5. My concern is that you placed the dewormer directly on her tongue, which means there is a good chance that she spit most of it out.

It should be placed between the gums and the cheek, as far back as possible...and any that hits the tongue is way back in the mouth....curling the lips is not a normal response to proper placement of the dewormer in the horse's mouth.

  6. Yes it's normal because most dewormers are very nasty. Sometimes you can get flavored ones.

  7. Yes it is my horse does the same thing some times either they like it or dont like it and just a hint dont ever ride your horse and the same day you worm him even if it been 7 hours because that makes them work and thats means they will start to manure and the wormer wont work

  8. I just think that the paste has a weird taste.. so your horse is just like trying to decide if he likes it or not and No I dont think any horse has had a reaction to de-wormer
