“I didn't expect a lot from this tournament”, says Svetlana Kuznetsova – Tennis Special
Russian world number 28, Svetlana Kuznetsova, is satisfied from her performance in the Roland Garros French Open 2012. She would have liked to cruise through to the quarter-final stage of the tournament but her opponent proved
to be a bit too tough. She lost in straight sets to the Italian tennis icon, Sara Errani, in the round of 16.
In a post-match interview, the 26-year-old Russian stated, "I didn't play a good game, far away from it," Kuznetsova said. "I didn't expect a lot from this tournament, and I made fourth round, so that's all right for the moment.
I just have to go back and work on my game - and it's already starting, like the drawing is already getting better, but there's still a lot of work to do.”
It seems like she was expecting nothing at all from the tour of Paris and that mindset might have helped her to oust the likes of the third seed Pole, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the third round of the tournament. It was one of the
biggest upset of the tournament especially considering that the number one Pole superstar was in terrific run of form and one of the top contenders to win the title. Kuznetsova showed no respect at all to the third ranked Pole and completely devastated her
registering a resounding straight sets victory with final scores of 6-1, 6-2.
Since that performance, the Russian came as the surprise package and people started thinking that she can repeat heroics of the French Open 2009 when she stunned everyone to take the title. She ousted her compatriot, world number
one, Dinara Safina, in the final of the tournament to claim the championship. Her form in the match against Radwanska was the glimpse of what she is capable of but she was very disappointing against the Italian. She couldn’t find the sweet part of her racquet
and her shots were landing just long; probably the luck was also against the Russian.
Talking about the match, she mentioned, "In the second set I started to play better, playing the right shots at the right times, but from 5-3 I just didn't do the right things. Maybe I was rushing too much, but Sara, for her game,
it's the best I've seen her play.”
It is good to see that people are accepting defeats and moving on instead of standing still and moaning about their losses. Former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, has bashed the official of her last match in this year’s edition
of the French Open. She said that a lot of calls were wrong that made her angry and it is a disgrace to be a part of such and grand event and still not being judged properly. This kind of attitude is acceptable from the players who work their heart out to
prepare for Grand Slam tournament but again this kind of response can kill the flare of the game and raise doubts in the mind of the viewers.
