Question:

I didn't get a gift receipt, so please help me decide...?

whether or not to give the original receipt with my gift. The place I got it from was CVS, and it was a perfume bottle for a friend's birthday.

I do want to give the receipt because she is quite picky about gifts. But the thing is, the price is not hidden. Can I blacken the prices with a sharpie? Also, is it okay if I cross out the store name as well?

So basically, my question is: Can I cross out anything besides the code on the receipt and will it be able to be returned?

  1. If she's that picky about gifts, then maybe you should consider giving her cash or a gift certificate instead of an actual object.  Giving a receipt with a gift is tacky.  It assumes that the person you're giving it to will be the kind of person who would value a gift from you so little that she'd return it for something she liked better, and it implies that you think she's that kind of person.  So in a very subtle way it insults her and demeans you.  The rule is a minor one, to be sure, but when in doubt give a gift certificate.

  2. If you cross out the store name she will not be able to return it, because she will not know where it is from!

You can cross out the price though I've returned a gift with the price crossed off on the receipt before and it wasn't a hassle.

  3. dont cross off the price, she might get the sale price on the returned item. dont give her a receipt. if she doesnt like it tuff. if she asks tell her you lost it.
