Okay well I'm a freshman and today you find out if you make the A or B team in volleyball. I made the B team.

But....

She said that I am the hardest worker at all of it and she said that they still aren't sure about me because they said I need to be more consistant. Also, that I am the top choice if they move people around to A team. I make ALL of my serves(very good) and I am the fastest runner when we do conditioning(running). I am pretty good at the passing. I am not bragging about any of this. All of the A team members said that they are SHOCKED that I am not on A team. Becuase they said that I am really really good. What makes me mad is that my best friend ( I am in no way trying to be rude about this, just telling the truth) made A team. I am much better than her. She is a slow runner and she doesn't have her serves at all and she's not consistant with passing either. But I think she made A team because the coaches and her mom work together. I know this is long. I just needed to get this out. If you have any advice or anything please tell me.

  1. Same thing happened to me in middle school......coaches always like to have a strong player on B team .....chances are you'll get to play a lot more than if you were on the A team...so just be excited you made a team at all! and hey, keep working hard, and show the coach/coaches how serious/dedicated you are and you just might move up to A team sooner than expected.

    good luck!

  2. your probably right

  3. I hope my high school team has like first string and second string

because well yea.I'm glad you said that so I know that now thanx and I hope you make the A team.work your hardest peace.<3

  4. It sounds as though the coach who put you on the B team didn't give you an answer that made sense to you as to why you're not on the A team.  As a former high school girls coach, "cut day" was definitely the most stressful day of the entire year.  I often had 80-90 girls show up for tryouts and I only had 36-40 spots to offer.  State finals were less stress!!  I don't know the particulars of your tryout, but I'll throw out a few observations from my 14 years coaching girls teams.

-- When putting together a freshman team, coaches have to try to balance the squad and not overload it with a particular position.  I don't know how tall you are, but if you're on the short side, you may find that taller players are ranked higher in tryouts in general.

-- Attitude is HUGE.  If a coach is trying to decide between two players of similar ability, she will most likely pick the one who is able to bounce back quickly from mistakes.  I recall seeing a girl who had a few volleyball skills but who would snap at others when she messed up.  I talked with her early on about her attitude and told her how important it is to be positive, but she kept it up during tryouts.  So I cut her.  I just didn't need that kind of negativity on the team.  Take a good look at your behavior and see what you can improve for the good of the team.

-- You also need to remove the chip from your shoulder about your friend.  Apparently the coaches saw something in her during tryouts that made them think she was a better bet.  Coaches are not trying to put together losing teams packed with their friends' kids.

-- Learn now that gossip and backbiting is unproductive.  Stop engaging in that stuff for the good of the team, and for your own peace of mind.  When you feel a negative thought coming up, replace it with something positive.

-- Listen to what the coach said about your level of consistency.  Work hard on being more consistent and improving your overall skill level.  Be positive and encouraging towards your teammates, and be kind to yourself.  If you feel yourself thinking, "This is so unfair!  The coaches are mean!" you will find yourself on the B-team bench for most of the season.

In short, I think you need to figure out how to be a better team player.  Volleyball is a sport that requires a great collective attitude.  I have cut skilled players with bad attitudes because I know they will poison the environment.
