I didn't make the team...?

There are two volleyball clubs in my state, NASA and RCVC. NASA will only take good players, and RCVC taked everybody. Last year I played for RCVC without even trying out

for NASA. I've improved a lot since then, and I tried out for NASA this year. They said that whoever made the team would get a call between 7:00 and 9:00. I never got the call. I looked for team rosters on the website, but nothing's posted. I feel horrible! I really thought I would make it, and now that I haven't I feel worthless. I want to go to make-up tryouts if they'll let me, but now I'm not sure they're even having them. I love volleyball, and if I can't get into NASA, I'm going to play for RCVC, but my whole high school team is playing for NASA. What can I do to make myself feel a little better? I just feel dejected right now.

  1. Don't give up. Often selecting a team is subjective and how someone performs in a tryout is not an indication of what a player can do. I was told that I could swim with a swim team but I would never be a "Points Swimmer" for that team.

They even told me not to count on much coaching because they couldn't afford to waste time on a swimmer who wouldn't score points. My parents went and got some outside coaching help for me. I never gave up. I wanted to show them they were wrong. I ended up going to college at a division one school on a swimming scholarship. The only person on that team both girls and boys to do so. Players develop at different ages. Go where you can get the best coaching and have the most fun. Use this experience to motivate you every day.

  2. I know the feeling. I have been playing volleyball since I was 10 (I'm 14 now) on a select club team. I have been a starter on the A team at my school since 7th grade. Then all of a sudden this year, I got cut.

I felt so worthless. I cried for about a week! Sometimes you'll never understand why you don't make the team. I sure don't.

I would email the person who was handling the cuts and VERY politely ask them why you didn't make it or what you could improve on. If you get a response, take it to heart. If you truly love volleyball, play for RCVC and get AMAZING! Maybe you'll even be team captain! :)

    I really hope I helped.

  3. I don't know if you're Christian or not, but you really have to trust God and trust that everything works out for the better. I tried out for a J.O. team last year that was really, really good. I was better than pretty much all of the other girls that tried out, but I still didn't make it. Later on the coach told me that he had a spot on the team for me, then told me that I didn't. I also did not believe that they scored correctly at the tryouts, and the scores were unfair.

I tried out for a not-as-skillful team and made it. I was disappointed that I couldn't make the better team, but stuck with my club anyways. That year, out of 6 tournaments, my team won first place in the  gold bracket 3 times. We placed 26 out of 180 teams. I was asked to be one of 3 girls in the entire club (5 teams of my age group) who traveled with the national team to Pittsburgh for a 3-day qualifier.

In another instance, I made the JV team at my school instead of the Varsity team. My JV team ended up becoming 2nd in the region, I formed WONDERFUL friendships, and I was asked to travel with the Varsity team to Tennessee for Nationals (we just made it home this weekend).

Sometimes, the worse or less-respectful situation in our eyes is the better in the grand scheme of things. Place your situation in God's hands, and even though His solution might not be what you expected or even what you had hoped for, it will always work out for the better.

  4. Show the coach on the other team up by dominating in RCVC.
