I do new little things at a time to help the enviroment. My newest thing that bugs me that I do not have enough knowledge about is gift cards and old crdeit cards. What can be done with these and are they recyclable. I would appreciate some input from anyone as to what can be done.

  1. Sounds like an opportunity for an art project.

  2. The most important impact humans can have on the planet is to stop overpopulating the planet. The impact of credit cards and gift cards is miniscule compared to the impact of Al Gore heating and cooling his mansion, or flying around the country in a jet aircraft.

The only real benefit of worrying about credit cards and greeting cards is psychological, and losing sight of the more important issues like eating less, having fewer children, not promoting welfare mothers to have more children, not promoting more births in 3rd world countries by feeding the problem with more food and money.

We are driving local farmers out of business in 3rd world countries by sending free food. They can't compete with free, so we are creating nations of dependents, growing populations of dependents, who tend to burn forests, kill wildlife, and spread disease.

The Global catastrophe is the growing population of the world.

  3. It all depends on what material the gift cards are made of. But a credit card HAS to be shredded.  The material wouldn't be recyclable anyway.  Not all that has to go into your shredder is recyclable, but still has to be shredded.  It's a bit of a trade-off.  We're concerned about the environment, as we should be, but we have to just as concerned about our safety and idendity theft.

Most cross-cut (ONLY type we should use) shredders have a slot for slipping in credit cards for shredding.  If yours doesn't, they are easily available.

Just keep asking though.  Caring enough about the environment to ask questions is commendable.

  4. I don't think they can be recycled. Most giftcards can be reused, they can usually be reloaded at the store.

I try to reduce what comes into my house to begin with. I have suspended or canceled accounts that I don't use.
