I am running Windows Vista Business. Everytime I get a windows update I lose permission to access my dvd-rw drive. When I load a cd or try to install something from a cd it wont do anything. My E: drive icon has one of those no smoking circles on it. When I try to take ownership of the drive it is unable to display the current owner and will not let me reassign ownership. I am the administrator account. I have turned UAC on and off and done everything else I can think of. The only solution I have found is to completely restore the pc to day 1 out of the box. I have tried restoring to a time before the problem and it doesnt work. The drive still works and I can burn cds like crazy but I cant read them. I have also uninstalled the drive itself and reinstalled it. It makes me think its got to be a software problem or setting somewhere because when I completely restore it the drive works fine. I tried turning off automatic windows updates but I still did it after a while.
