  1. First, do as the others suggested, read through the instructional manual that came with your router. It will have detailed steps outlined along with a User manual. If you cannot locate your instructions, which would be odd, you will need to browse to the manufacturer website, click on Support, the Drivers and Downloads, enter your make and model, give your OS version if necessary, and then the specific Drivers and Downloads page for your product will display in the browser window. Look through the items you can download, locate the manual, and download it to your desktop, or your Downloads folder if using Vista, or basically anywhere you wish. Once you have it please read through it carefully, not once but twice. Often reading instructions a second time allows the reader to catch items missed the first time, and also impresses the information more strongly in the mind.

Now, the basic steps for adding a router is to first unhook the Ethernet cable from the back of the system you wish to use for this procedure, and unplug the other end from your modem. Make sure your computer, modem and router are all unplugged from electrical outlets.

Take the router and set it next to your modem. Plug the cable you just unhooked into the router. Plug the other end into the modem. Take a second Ethernet cable and plug one end into an available port at the back of the router, and plug the other end into the system you unplugged in the first step.

Now, in this order turn things on: first turn on the modem and wait for it to fully boot up. Next, turn on your router and wait for it to fully boot up. Lastly, turn on the system you plugged into the router.

Now, in the system you just turned on, take the Drivers and Software disk which came with the router and pop it into the CD/DVD drive. Wait for the installation page to display on your desktop. Run the installation software.

Next, depending upon the OS version you are using, you need to run either the Setup Wireless Access Point or Router, (Vista) or the Wireless Network Setup Wizard, (XP).

Here are some help pages you can use in setting up the wireless router and other home networking help pages you will need to complete your setup and add necessary security:

    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows...

    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows...

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using...

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using...

It would help if you had outlined what Windows OS versions you wish to network. I could have left out a link if you only use Vista machines. Anyway, this is enough to get you up and running in no time at all. Just be sure to carefully go over the information so you are sure you understand what you need to do. This cuts down on errors and frustrations. Good luck and have a nice day.
