I got my P45 but it seems I have been on an Emergency tax code! (BR)

I want to know what my correct code should be, please. I am working full time. How do I figure it out or is there a 'default' one there should be?

  1. Code BR is basic rate, not emergency code. E code is 543L on a week 1 basis. When you start your next job, do not give this P45 to your employer. Instead, ask him for a form P46 - sign this to say this is your only job and you will be put on E code. Then ring your tax office and ask them to issue a cumulative code to your new employer. Your tax refund will come through your pay packet.

  2. get in touch with your local tax office who will give advice

  3. Telephone your local tax office, the number is in your local telephone directory, actually any tax office will do.  Tell them your problem and your National Insurance number and they will send it to you, or get your Wages Department to do it for you.
