My betta is in a .5 gallon tank right now and he always blows bubble nests so i do not know if i should go bigger or just keep the one i have. I would only go to a 1 gallon tank if i got a bigger one because i do not have the money for anything bigger!

  1. If your gonna move him to something bigger then get a 10 gallon aquarium from Wal-Mart. They're only 10 dollars. And if you don't have money for a hood just don't fill it up all the way.

  2. bubble nesting isn't really a sign that they are happy, more that they are bored. the only time i've had my bettas bubble nest is when they've been in smaller tanks with very little current, as soon as they're introduced to larger tanks with some current/surface movement, they're far too busy patrolling and investigating to bubble nest. i don't actually think it's a sign of "happyness".

get the bigger tank, 5-10 gallons can be picked up for the same price as 1 gallons if you look hard enough, either in pet store sales or through craigslist. the betta will thank you for it provided you put it through the nitrogen cycle first. they are actually quite active fish. all mine have been the life and soul of the tank.

OH and it's siamese fighting fish, not chinese. they originate from thailand aka siam.

  3. for him to be blowing the bubble nest means he is happy i would just keep him in the same 1 you got for now or you could make him unhappy if you were to move him

  4. I was told once by a breeder of them that they actually prefer smaller spaces, and can actually find too large a space stressful.

If it is the only fish in there, I was told go small. Under two litres; one litre is even enough. I had one in a one gallon tank with a few other fish it didn't conflict with. Another time I had one in a one litre jar (with gravel and a plant and all, of course). I've seen them in smaller.vessels. I've seen little beta tanks in pet stores that were only a litre.

(A litre is about the same as a quart.)

  5.      Ok, if you are thinking about going smaller, DONT. Any thing under 5 gallons (to live in permanently) is cruel, they may do ok in little cups in pet stores but they do not thrive in them. SO if you want to change tanks get a bigger one, i strongly advise you get a ten gallon or bigger. If you do not have the money, (now) save it up. You are not doing your betta any favors what so ever if you get him a smaller tank. In fact he may be bored and miserable in a teeny tiny tank. Ok, here is an example for you. Would you rather live in a 5' by 5' room for the rest of your life, or a nice roomy house?

So what i am try ing to say is if you dont have the money, just leave him in what he is in. And if you love your fish save up and buy him a bigger nicer tank, he will thank you for it (in his own way.) I have also included a great betta site, please take a minute look, it could be beneficial to your betta... http://www.nippyfish.net/ Good luck.
