"A universal meaning of life is better than a personal one."

If there were a universal meaning of life which I doubt I wouldn't care because I really don't think it's needed because I find a personal one just as good and that there also being a universal one wouldn't make a difference at all, because really, who cares? Especially, when you truly feel very satisfied in your life because you give it enough meaning.

  1. I like the statement that "A universal meaning of life is better than a personal one"  because all of this self-absorbed existential "I am my own mother" c**p is getting really old. I think of the statement as being a philosophical Guantanamo for all these terror of self-indulgence characters. Why do we all row the same way for a while, eh?

(Just kidding, I wanted to see how it would fit but that suit isn't in my size.)

  2. If a Universal meaning of life was to be found, depending on your personality, the question would still remain in what steps, methods, and plans are you going to use to implement it in your life.

    1) As with all true answers of truth, open up several more questions.. frustrating to some, interesting and all-consuming to others...

  3. well i get what ur saying dude but don't you really need to have not only a universal meaning but a universal perspective of life to know what's yours is?i mean that how would you know your personal meaning is if you didn't have a universal meaning.plus you really NEED to care about others before you can care for yourself.to understand other people feelings and to know how they think is a whole new level of one's own unselflessness and own's thinking and kindness.really you do need the world's meaning to know and create yours.

  4. Ones life is there own, to make it a universal, I can see no motive for this except for utter contempt for freedom.

  5. I disagree with the statement.  Any universal meaning of life will always be arbitrary. So by believing you are pursuing a universal meaning in life, you'd still be pursuing a personal meaning in life, you'd just believe that its universal.  And since there is no valid measurement of meaning in life, its impossible to determine if one meaning is "better" than another.  I believe that the meaning of life is to give it meaning yourself, and that can only be done by an individual alone.

  6. Let us say that you were raised in a Protestant church and because of that you attended church...

The church has a "universal meaning of life" but until you study what that meaning is and what it means then you cannot form through your new understanding your personal meaning of life...

In the meantime....people spend their lives molding and mending their personal meaning of life...

  7. I can't really agree either.I suppose it would be better in the sense that it would give people a clear path to walk on, and there would be no need for existential worries--the pain, fear and wonder that has given birth to philosophy and religion would cease to exist if a universal meaning to life was discovered and proven to be such.

But I strongly feel that there is none, and I can't help but be glad, since I'm given the freedom to choose my own meaning, and thus my own ethics, be the judge of myself and rule myself as I wish.

  8. If there is a universal meaning to life we are not privy to it. We have only our personal meaning...our personal philosophy to carry us. And hopefully our personal philosophy will include as many others as possible to try to keep the balance which is so needed.

  9. ...i too, disagree with that statement...

...my life, choices and actions are my own...
