I don't believe global warming is real. Why if it existed, would the seasons change so much?

  1. one major solar gust from the sun and we'd all be dead ! how funny that we worry about something we really don't have any control over ! you know that  one volcano releases more sulfur dioxide (a "green house gas") than 20 moderate sized city put together! give it up ! let me drive my gas guzzler suv and hope i can see you so you dont get ran over !!!

  2. Who said the seasons have changed? In long term trends, this spring is quite NORMAL. Here is a basic statistical theorem that anyone should be aware of - anything two standard deviations away from the mean is within in the realm of normality. This spring, which we're not even halfway through yet, may well fall within that range. Even if it isn't, consider the warm springs that were more than 2 STDs away from the mean and it all cancels out. Go into any temperature database and you'll find many unusually warm springs.

To calculate the mean and STDEV, you have to look up a reliable local database and they should have these values. Where I live, the average spring temperature is 41 F and the average STDEV is 5 degrees. This means, a spring of 31 F is just as normal as a spring of 51 F. The 31-degree spring may be cold and the 51-degree spring is warm, but they are both normal.

(I took the March through May mean and STDEV for this example).

  3. With increased global warming the one thing you can expect is change.  With increased global warming, you would expect to see increased change between the seasons, and much more violent episodic weather.  This as the increased heat increases the hydrologic cycle ( the amount of water vapor that evaprates into the air and forms clouds).  This in turn causes more rain, and an increase in other weather related phenoma such as wind and tornatodos.

And, yes, the Earth does have this way of taking care of itself.  As I have just described, the increased hydrologic cycle, the increase in clouds, and the increase relfection of sunlight back into space off of the cloudes are all negative-feedback mechanisms that help to control and limit increasing global warming!

I think that global warming is real, or at least there is substantial climatic change on the horizon, and that man is at least part of the problem.  I also think that there are likely natural phenomea involved, such as cyclical sunspot activity, cyclical weather changes, and even volcanic gases (not to mention cow belches, and other greenhouse gases).   If we can do something, no matter how small, to limit global climate change, then it would behouve us to do so

I also think that there is a great deal of anti-global warming propaganda out there. Propaganda that is being spread, and spoon-fed to the us by the same industries which have always been opposed to changes in their way of doing business.  Changes which would clean up our air, fight increasing global warming, and take away from their bottom line.

  4. The first two have very good answers but the first one needs to be in english. basically global warming exists because the ice caps are melting the poles are moving (saw that in astronomy video.) This season has been the coldest that I have ever seen. The earth can fix itself-to a certain degree. If people keep on polluting the air our ozone layer is going to get worse and worse.

  5. What they are referring to is that the North and South Poles are melting. Temperatures anywhere else does not matter per say. If you look at the poles and see what the temperature changes have been you have to agree that the poles are warming.

Now you stated that the earth has it's way of correcting itself I agree with you because if it were no so we would be in a deep freeze or totally dry.

  6. global warming is just a conspiracy the governmet made to have an excuse for letting billions of people die, from the coming food crisis

if the government really cared about us, and global warming realy existed we would all be driving cars hat run on hydrogen, since the technology exists

  7. Global warming refers to change in the global mean temperature.  It doesn't apply to any particular instance of weather. You say "This is the coldest spring I have ever seen," but how old are you and where do you live?  Most people really don't pay that much attention to the weather, and only have vague recollections of what the temperature was or how much rain happened in their childhood.  In fact, it hasn't been cold where I live, temperatures were running 20-30 F above normal over the weekend.  Some places exceeded 100 F. Does my experience prove global warming, just like yours disproves it?  No! We're just talking about weather.

And seasonal effects are much greater than the effect of global warming, that's why things change so much from season to season.  The seasons are caused by changes of tens (or more) watts per square meter in the energy balance, global warming is only caused by the Earth being a watt or two out of balance--but nevertheless, that adds up and eventually causes problems.

As the for the Earth "healing itself,"  I would rather say that many things on the Earth are buffered and follow Le Chatelier's principle, but if you wish to think of the Earth like an organism, think of this: the human body has the ability to heal itself too---to a point, but then it dies.

EDIT: skjoldborg, did you actually read the BBC article you referenced?  Here is one thing it said

"The WMO points out that the decade from 1998 to 2007 was the warmest on record. Since the beginning of the 20th Century, the global average surface temperature has risen by 0.74C."

You twist that around to say that the past decade has been one of cooling, just because 1998 was warm.  Again, climate is about long term trends, not about short term fluctuations. I'm sure you'd like us to wait a thousand years so that global warming would either be verified or falsified, the problem is that if it verifies, we can't wait that long.  Warming by greenhouse gases is hardly advanced quantum mechanics, the basic calculations that lead people to worry about global warming can be done by someone in freshman physics. Stefan's Law has already been verified.

  8. A recent article on BBC News described how the last 10 years have seen a period of cooling.  This is by some attributed to La Nina offsetting global warming.

Historically Earth has never been in a state of even temperatures.  There is no such thing as a complete balance. What is also curious is that ice core samples have shown tremendous correlations between temp and CO2 however (what Al Gore ignored?) is that Temp changes PRECEEDED CO2 changes.

I do also wonder what sort of data would disprove global warming.   A propper scientific theory (see Carl Popper) should be vulnerable to refutation.  What sort of temp data would make all those people who say that the debate is over actually eat their lunch and quit their jobs, jump off a cliff, whatever.

Problem is one of data sample size and shoddy science in general.

Cyclical Sun spot activity has been correlated back 300 years and predicts a strong cooling phase around the corner.
